The Three-Loop Free Energy for High-Temperature QED and QCD with Fermions

    Get PDF
We compute the free energy density for gauge theories, with fermions, at high temperature and zero chemical potential. Specifically, we analytically compute the free energy through O(g4)O(g^4), which requires the evaluation of three-loop diagrams. This computation extends our previous result for pure gauge QCD.Comment: 26 pages, 9 postscript figures, UW/PT-94-1

    Letter to a Younger Generation

    Get PDF
This paper has the purpose of transmitting to the younger generation of economists some insights and judgments that seem to have been bypassed or overlooked as the literature of the economics profession has evolved. In the main, the paper tries to explain what is "The right place" within economics to employ particular sets of assumptions or methods. Where is the use of the representative consumer appropriate, and where not? What is the "natural" range of application for overlapping generation models? When is it appropriate to treat the capital flow to (or from) a country as infinitely elastic with respect to the interest rate? These and other questions will be pursued, with the objective of alerting the younger generations to important decisions they have to make as they strive to keep economic science robust, relevant and helpful in improving the economic life of real-world populations.

Primordial magnetic fields constrained by CMB anisotropies and dynamo cosmology

Magneto-curvature stresses could deform magnetic field lines and this would give rise to back reaction and restoring magnetic stresses [Tsagas, PRL (2001)]. Barrow et al [PRD (2008)] have shown in Friedman universe the expansion to be slow down in spatial section of negative Riemann curvatures. From Chicone et al [CMP (1997)] paper, proved that fast dynamos in compact 2D manifold implies negatively constant Riemannian curvature, here one applies the Barrow-Tsagas ideas to cosmic dynamos. Fast dynamo covariant stretching of Riemann slices of cosmic Lobachevsky plane is given. Inclusion of advection term on dynamo equations [Clarkson et al, MNRAS (2005)] is considered. In absence of advection a fast dynamo is also obtained. Viscous and restoring forces on stretching particles decrease, as magnetic rates increase. From COBE data (δBB105\frac{{\delta}B}{B}\approx{10^{-5}}), one computes stretching δVyVy=1.5δBB1.5×105\frac{{\delta}V^{y}}{V^{y}}=1.5\frac{{\delta}B}{B}\approx{1.5{\times}10^{-5}}. Zeldovich et al has computed the maximum magnetic growth rate as γmax8.0×101t1{\gamma}_{max}\approx{8.0{\times}10^{-1}t^{-1}}. From COBE data one computes a lower growth rate for the magnetic field as γCOBE6.0×106t1{\gamma}_{COBE}\approx{6.0{\times}10^{-6}t^{-1}}, well-within Zeldovich et al estimate. Instead of the Harrison value Bt4/3B\approx{t^{{4/3}}} one obtains the lower primordial field B106tB\approx{10^{-6}t} which yields the B106GB\approx{10^{-6}G} at the 1s1s Big Bang time.Comment: Dept of theoretical physics-UERJ-Brasi

A simple approach for monitoring business service time variation.

Control charts are effective tools for signal detection in both manufacturing processes and service processes. Much of the data in service industries comes from processes having nonnormal or unknown distributions. The commonly used Shewhart variable control charts, which depend heavily on the normality assumption, are not appropriately used here. In this paper, we propose a new asymmetric EWMA variance chart (EWMA-AV chart) and an asymmetric EWMA mean chart (EWMA-AM chart) based on two simple statistics to monitor process variance and mean shifts simultaneously. Further, we explore the sampling properties of the new monitoring statistics and calculate the average run lengths when using both the EWMA-AV chart and the EWMA-AM chart. The performance of the EWMA-AV and EWMA-AM charts and that of some existing variance and mean charts are compared. A numerical example involving nonnormal service times from the service system of a bank branch in Taiwan is used to illustrate the applications of the EWMA-AV and EWMA-AM charts and to compare them with the existing variance (or standard deviation) and mean charts. The proposed EWMA-AV chart and EWMA-AM charts show superior detection performance compared to the existing variance and mean charts. The EWMA-AV chart and EWMA-AM chart are thus recommended

Nucleosynthesis of Elements in Low to Intermediate Mass Stars through the AGB Phase

We present a review of the main phases of stellar evolution with particular emphasis on the nucleosynthesis and mixing mechanisms in low- and intermediate-mass stars. In addition to explicit studies of the effects of the first, second and third dredge-up, we also discuss cool bottom processing and hot bottom burning.Comment: 30 pages, latex, 18 figures, uses style files aipproc.cls aipproc.sty epsf.sty ; to be published in (refereed) conference proceedings "Astrophysical Implications of the Laboratory Study of Presolar Materials", ed. Catalysts on Demand: Selective Oxidations by Laboratory-Evolved Cytochrome P450 BM3

    Get PDF
Efficient catalysts for selective oxidation of C-H bonds using atmospheric oxygen are highly desirable to decrease the economic and environmental costs associated with conventional oxidation processes. We have used methods of directed evolution to generate variants of bacterial cytochrome P450 BM3 that catalyze hydroxylation and epoxidation of a wide range of nonnative substrates. This fatty acid hydroxylase was converted to a propane monooxygenase (PMO) capable of hydroxylating propane at rates comparable to that of BM3 on its natural substrates. Variants along the PMO evolutionary lineage showed broadened substrate scope; these became the starting points for evolution of a wide array of enzymes that can hydroxylate and derivatize organic scaffolds. This work demonstrates how a single member of enzyme family is readily converted by evolution into a whole family of catalysts for organic synthesis
